Abstract
Objectives : We tried to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and related factors among college student on Jeju island in Korea.
Methods : One university in Jeju island was selected as the study population. Of the 1000 total respondents, 479 were men and 521 were women. The data was gathered using self-reporting questionnaires consisting of sociodemographic factors, health behavior, etc. The Korean Beck Depression Inventory (K-BDI) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed for comparisons.
Results : The prevalence of depressive symptoms among college students is 7.7% in total, 8.6% in male, 6.9% in female. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that familial support, education level of father or school record were associated with greater risk of depressive symptoms.
Conclusion : Familial support (OR= 5.388, 95% C.I. 1.646-17.636), education level of father (OR=1.086, 95% C.I. 1.003-1.176) or school record (OR= 1.747, 95% C.I. 1.008-3.026) were found to be a significant correlates of depressive symptoms among college students in Jeju island. Variety of support to enhance family relation, reduce the stress including sociocultural and political policies and programs would be needed to reduce risk of depressive symptoms among college students.
